Antique Culture of the Croatian Mediterranean - Stari Grad '96

Mosaics

The ancient town of Pharos, one of the oldest on the Croatian side of the Adriatic was founded by Greek settlers from the island of Pharos in 385 B.C. The town with its ideal location at the mouth of a large estuary beside extensive fields, flourished throughout the period of the Roman Empire. It was during this time that alterations were made to numerous buildings and many were decorated with Roman mosaics. Around ten mosaics have been discovered to date, dating from the time of the early Roman Empire through to late antiquity. The profusion of polychrome mosaics that can be found on this site has prompted the setting up of a restoration workshop which gives the opportunity to enhance young experts and students to enhance their mastery of this technique through practical experience.
