We are celebrating many passages with this convocation:
- Croatia's passage to independence
- sea passages between the jewels of the Dalmatian islands and the coast
- passage of students and teachers from timid explorers of the English
language to confident and creative language-makers.
During the conference we can explore strands of coastal beach and the
passages of the old
City of Split, a living architectural history built within the
Roman Diocletian's Palace.
We can celebrate with passages of words and music, with laughter and theatrics.
We also have hopes, that war will pass to peace, that the refugees who crowd Croatia can return home, and that teachers of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina who have been separated by war and destruction can come together again.
We invite anyone interested in English language teaching to join us. We are particularly interested in discussing the Matura, the graduation thesis and examination taken by
Croatian secondary school seniors. Anyone with insights into evaluating English language proficiency at this level is urgently requested to participate.
Another of the conference themes is musical passages. In addition to presentations on using music in English language teaching, students of the I Gimnazia in Split will present some excerpts from The musical Oliver, by Lionel
Bart. This was originally jointly produced by students from Dover,
England and Split.
